SEAL BEACH : A Weekend Slate of Founders’ Festivities
Founders’ Day, celebrated on and off for decades, has become an annual event at last. This weekend will be the first time the city holiday has been observed two years in a row.
City leaders hope today’s carnival at McGaugh Elementary School will build enthusiasm for the Founder’s Day Parade on Main Street on Oct. 30.
Since the city’s incorporation in 1915, Founders’ Day celebrations have been sporadic at best. “We had a 75th anniversary celebration in 1990,” said Mayor George Brown. “That was a real big whoop-de-do and kind of got the ball rolling.”
Last year, Founders’ Day events raised $4,500 for the refurbishment of city parks. This year’s proceeds will also be donated to the city Parks and Recreation Department.
Brown credits Founders’ Day chairwoman Dorothy Whyte for making the holiday an annual event. City leaders hope the celebration will bring residents together in what has become a diverse community that includes a beach city, Leisure World and the Naval Weapons Base.
The PTA carnival at McGaugh Elementary School runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. On Oct. 30, Founder’s Day events begin at 11 a.m. on the greenbelt in downtown Seal Beach, with the Main Street parade beginning at noon.
