LOW ‘BLOW’

How can Jack Mathews do an article on John Travolta without mentioning “Blow Out,” his breakthrough film (“He’s a Hotshot Again,” Oct. 9)?

Somewhere in between making “films exploiting pop culture trends” in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Travolta made “Blow Out” with Brian De Palma. I remember watching the film at the Avco in Westwood, and scene after scene the audience was applauding a remarkable film with Travolta making his mature film debut.

“Blow Out” should have propelled his career to Mars, to use Travolta’s phrase, as “Pulp Fiction” is doing right now. Why he went on to do “Perfect” after “Blow Out” is beyond me.
