Two gang-related drive-by shootings that occurred about an hour apart Friday night left two men dead, police said.

The first shooting took place around 9:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of West McFadden Avenue. Jose Luis Silva, 18, was riding his bicycle across the street when a vehicle approached him, said Sgt. Eric Vedborg.

“He was shot several times,” Vedborg said. “One of the bullets struck him in the head and he died at the scene.”

Vedborg said Silva, a resident of Santa Ana, was a known gang member.

The second shooting occurred at 10:40 p.m. in the 1900 block of West 17th Street. Freddy Fernandez, 23, of Santa Ana was hit by several bullets fired from a car.

“(Fernandez) was walking down the street when a vehicle drove alongside of him and stopped. A passenger leaned out and fired a bunch of shots,” Vedborg said.

Fernandez was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange where he later died.

Police would release few details about the shootings on Saturday because they are still under investigation by gang investigators. No arrests have been made, Vedborg said.
