PORT HUENEME : Harbor Revenues Up $1 Million Last Year

Share

Operating revenues at the deep-water Port of Hueneme increased about $1 million last year to $6.1 million--their highest total ever, a study has concluded.

A record number of commercial vessels--278--passed through the port in the fiscal year ending June 30, and workers handled 790,000 tons of cargo, a jump of about 26%, according to the study.

The increases were largely due to new business, said Raymond E. Fosse, president of the Oxnard Harbor District’s Board of Commissioners, which manages the port.

“I think it verified what we had anticipated, looking at the business that we had brought in and what we had before,” Fosse said of the study. “We knew it had to be going up.”

The first comprehensive study on the harbor since 1989, conducted by the consulting firm of Leeper, Cambridge and Campbell, also found that the harbor currently generates about 2,500 jobs in the county and brings in $275 million in economic benefits. That is an increase of $75 million and 500 jobs compared to five years ago.

Since 1989, the Oxnard Harbor District has attracted Cool Carriers and its customer Sunkist Growers. Other firms that have started using the port include Land Rover/Range Rover and Mitsubishi Motors.

Bananas accounted for 23.9% of the port’s cargo, and other fresh fruit accounts for 22.6%, while automobiles make up 13.9% of shipments.
