YORBA LINDA : Loophole in Pets Limits Rule Tightened by City
Pet owners will no longer be able to get around the city’s limit of three pets per parcel by buying adjoining vacant properties.
The City Council last week tightened the zoning code to eliminate a loophole no city official ever anticipated.
“To be honest, we never thought someone would buy a vacant lot just to house their pets,” community development director Patricia M. Haley said.
But Dan Lewis and Roberta Davis did. City officials told Lewis and Davis last year that they would not be able to keep their eight German shepherds and one chow chow in their back yard, so they bought two adjoining vacant lots.
After neighbors complained about the dogs, who were kept in a fenced area that encompassed all three lots, city officials changed the zoning code to require residents to get a conditional use permit to house more than three dogs or cats, regardless of the number of properties the residents own.
The ordinance only applies to dogs or cats older than 4 months.
