PALOS VERDES ESTATES : Council Amends City’s Film Permit Law
Paul Mitchell, owner of the most popular home for filming in the city, has sparked a change in the city’s film permit policy.
Acting on a request from Mitchell, the City Council voted 5 to 0 Tuesday to amend its film permit ordinance and allow filming at local homes for up to eight days a year.
Previously, each home was allowed one film permit per year but the number of days allowed for filming was not specified. “It could be one day or 364 days,” Mitchell said.
If the new ordinance results in more filming, it could boost city revenues; Palos Verdes Estates charges $1,700 a day to film at private homes.
Mitchell said his French Chateau-style home on Paseo La Cresta has been filmed twice in the past two years, once for a MasterCard commercial and once for a Cartier jewelry commercial.
Mitchell, formerly an engineer who now sells real estate, declined to give exact figures, but he said that for each day it takes to set up the commercial he is paid $700 to $2,500. For each day of actual filming, he is paid $3,000 to $8,000.
