Nineteen people were arrested when detectives moved in on what they characterized as one of the largest horse and sports gambling rings in the Los Angeles area, police said Monday.

The illegal betting operation operated in several Southland communities and did millions of dollars in business weekly, said Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Rigo Romero.

Detectives culminated the 14-week investigation Sunday when they served warrants at 15 locations in Los Angeles, Inglewood, El Segundo, Downey, Anaheim Hills, Monterey Park, Arcadia, San Gabriel and Palm Desert, Romero said.

“This was the largest horse and bookmaking operation that Administrative Vice Division detectives have encountered in many years,” Romero said.

Detectives estimated that the operation handled bets for more than 400 gamblers, “doing a gross betting volume of several million dollars per week,” he said.
