COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NATION : Phillips’ Streak Given New Life

Good news for Nebraska I-back Lawrence Phillips. His 100-yard rushing streak is still alive.

After a review of game films and a check of NCAA rules, a change has been made in the official statistics from the Cornhuskers’ 24-7 victory over Colorado on Saturday, Nebraska officials said Wednesday.

Nebraska’s sports information office conferred with NCAA statistics coordinator Jim Wright, who said the 17 yards lost in the second half on an errant pitch from quarterback Brook Berringer to Phillips should be credited to Berringer.

Initially the loss went to Phillips, whose string of eight consecutive games of 100 yards or more rushing would have ended with his 86-yard total.

However, the film and review of Article 8 of the NCAA Football Statisticians’ Manual indicated Berringer has to be charged with the loss because Phillips had no “opportunity to advance” the pitch that bounced off his shoulder pads.

The change means Phillips finished with 103 yards rushing in 24 carries. That gave him nine consecutive games of 100 yards or more rushing.

Eric Clair of Penn State, a starting defensive tackle, will probably sit out the rest of the regular season after suffering a broken right foot in practice.
