Orange County Almanac

Share

You’ll still occasionally catch Orange County old-timers referring to the southwestern part of Santa Ana as Delhi (pronounced “del-high”).

The area was given the unusual name in the 1870s by the McFadden brothers, two well-known Orange County pioneers. The brothers migrated to the area from Delhi, N.Y., and decided to name the property they were developing after their old hometown.

A small farming community, complete with a post office and a school, prospered there. Eventually, the area was annexed by Santa Ana. Most of the farmland is gone now, replaced by tract homes and apartments. In the 1960s, the county changed the name of Delhi Road to Warner Avenue.
