Agassi Upsets Sampras in Paris

Andre Agassi defeated Pete Sampras, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5, on Friday to lead a string of upsets in the quarterfinals of the Paris Open tennis tournament.

Three-time champion Boris Becker and defending champion Goran Ivanisevic also lost. Marc Rosset of Switzerland edged Becker in a hard-serving contest, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (9-7), and Michael Chang upset Ivanisevic, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Fourth-seeded Sergi Bruguera, the two-time French Open champion from Spain, reached the semifinals by defeating unseeded Czech Petr Korda, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

Jennifer Capriati, returning to pro tennis after a 14-month hiatus, will play a first-round match against sixth-seeded Anke Huber next week in the Virginia Slims of Philadelphia. Huber, 19, of Germany, defeated Martina Navratilova and Mary Pierce last month on the way to winning the Porsche Grand Prix in Germany.

Capriati accepted one of two wild-card invitations to the tournament, a tuneup for the Virginia Slims Championships in New York.

Arantxa Sanchez Vicario defeated Zina Garrison-Jackson, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals of the Bank of the West Classic in Oakland.

In today’s semifinals, Sanchez Vicario will face third-seeded Lindsay Davenport, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over the fifth-seeded Huber.

Hockey

The NHL Players Assn. is discussing proposals for tournaments that might be staged to replace games canceled by the lockout.

One proposal is for a lengthy series that would be played in Canadian and American cities and would be sponsored by CTV, a Canadian television network. However, a spokesman for the NHLPA said it would not commit to anything until it sees whether the first tournament, to be held Nov. 10-12 at Hamilton, Canada, is a success.

Representatives of the union and the NHL will meet next week, probably on Monday. They have reported no progress from their last sessions, held each of the last two Mondays. The lockout has wiped out 190 games in 35 days.

A Russian “Dream Team” of National Hockey League players began a 10-day, five-game charity exhibition tour through the country with a 5-4 victory over Spartak Moscow at packed Sokolniky Hall in Moscow, where Russian fans gave the team a warm welcome.

The stars’ lineup included last season’s NHL most valuable player, Sergei Federov of the Detroit Red Wings, and four New York Rangers--Alexei Kovalev, Sergei Zubov, Sergei Nemchinov and Alexander Karpotsev--the first Russian players to have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup.

Motor Racing

Michael Schumacher, trying to become the first German to win the Formula One championship, took the provisional pole for Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka.

Schumacher, driving a Benetton-Ford, had a fast lap of 1 minute 37.209 seconds, averaging 134.590 m.p.h. over the 3.64-mile circuit. Damon Hill, second in points, was second-fastest in a Williams-Renault.

If Schumacher wins and Hill fails to finish second, the title belongs to the German. Schumacher also could clinch by placing second with Hill finishing out of the points.

Baseball

The Dodgers acquired first baseman Jamie Dismuke, a 25-year-old left-handed hitter, on waivers from the Atlanta Braves.

A day after releasing Joe Oliver, the Cincinnati Reds signed catcher Damon Berryhill to a minor league contract with triple-A Indianapolis.

Miscellany

UCLA upset No. 1 and unbeaten Stanford in women’s volleyball, 10-15, 15-4, 15-13, 12-15, 15-11, at Pauley Pavilion Friday night. The Bruins (23-3) were led by freshman Kara Milling with a career-high 23 kills. Stanford is 20-1.

Three Army football players have been been barred from playing for the rest of the season for groping female cadets when the women ran past during a pep rally.

The three unidentified athletes were also restricted to the U.S. Military Academy grounds for 90 days, received demerits and were ordered to march penalty tours for 80 hours, the academy said.

Slippery Rock basketball Coach Robert Barlett resigned amid an investigation of his program for possible NCAA violations.

The Houston Chronicle, citing an unidentified source close to the case, said the University of Houston may face two years’ probation after its football staff improperly arranged for running back Ostell Miles to receive furniture for his off-campus apartment in 1991.
