Bachy Gonzalez and Karlo Amaya each rushed for 130 yards as Estancia defeated Aliso Niguel, 17-14, in a Pacific Coast League game Friday at Orange Coast College.

Gonzalez carried 21 times and Amaya 26 as the Eagles (4-5, 1-3) kept their playoff hopes alive by holding off the late-charging Wolverines.

The Eagles jumped out to a 14-0 lead by halftime, as quarterback Frough Jahid scored from one-yard in the first quarter and Gonzalez scored from seven yards before the end of the second quarter.

“That was probably the most exciting first half I’ve seen here at Estancia,” Coach John Liebengood said of his team’s 187 total yards in the first two quarters.

After a scoreless third quarter, Aliso Niguel (3-6, 1-3) closed the gap on a 24-yard scoring pass from Scott Nemeth to Justin Martin with 5 minutes 49 seconds remaining.

Ben Novak’s 32-yard field goal gave the hosts a 17-7 cushion just over three minutes later, but the Wolverines battled back to narrow the margin to three on 35-yard touchdown pass from Nemeth to Andrew Mashburn 29 seconds later.

Nemeth led the visitors, completing nine of 17 passes for 136 yards.
