Attorney General Race
The headline of your Oct. 26 article “Lungren ‘Sleaze’ Is Assailed” was highly misleading. In fact it is his opponent, Tom Umberg, who is running a campaign advertisement blaming the attorney general for the death of Polly Klaas. There is only one relevant fact in this story. Contrary to the claims of the ad, the name of the alleged murderer, Richard Allen Davis, was on the state database. If Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies had checked the computer they would have verified the criminal history of Davis. This is a fact that no one involved with the case disputes.
Unfortunately, the Umberg ad is not concerned with facts. The exploitation of the tragic death of this little girl is perhaps a new low in California politics.

* Would somebody please put a call in to Joe Klaas over at the Umberg campaign office and get a clarification of exactly who is exploiting his granddaughter’s death for political advantage?
