Los Angeles police on Sunday were investigating separate drive-by shootings that wounded two men in North Hollywood.

In the first incident, a 26-year-old North Hollywood man was shot once in the chest outside a party in the 6800 block of Fulton Avenue, Sgt. Joseph Brazas said.

Paramedics responded to the scene at 10:21 p.m. Saturday and took Juan Martinez to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Investigators believe the gunmen were gang members who asked Martinez where he was from before they began shooting, said Detective John Edwards. Edwards, who interviewed Martinez on Sunday, said the man was expected to recover from the wound.

About two hours after the first shooting, a security guard was shot five times in the right shin after two men he had told earlier to leave a bar for intoxication returned with a gun, Lt. Nick Zingo said.

The guard told police that the gunmen climbed into a pickup truck, but returned several minutes later and opened fire on him as he stood in the parking lot of the El Merengue Bar in the 12100 block of Vanowen Street, Zingo said.

The guard, whose name was not released, was in stable condition Sunday at the Medical Center of North Hollywood, Zingo said.

No one had been arrested Sunday in connection with either shooting, which police said were not related.
