FOUNTAIN VALLEY : Parked Motor Homes Banned on Lilac Ave.

Despite one resident’s complaint that he would have no place to park his motor home, the City Council last week adopted an ordinance that bans parking of oversize vehicles on Lilac Avenue.

The council gave final approval Tuesday to the ordinance, which will go into effect Dec. 1.

The ordinance prohibits vehicles longer than 18 feet or wider than 8 feet from parking on Lilac between Richardson Street and Harbor Boulevard.

The ordinance was prompted by concerns that non-residents have been parking motor homes and campers overnight on Lilac Avenue and creating safety hazards.

But Ronald King, a resident of the area, told the council that the parking ban would create a hardship for him and suggested permit parking for people who live in the neighborhood.

Other residents spoke in favor of the ordinance, however, saying that it will help solve problems on the street.

Delores Stidham, whose home faces Lilac Avenue, said she is tired of looking at a motor home with a flat tire parked in front of her house.

“It just upsets me to think this man lives there,” she said. “I don’t want to see this anymore.”

Bill Raymond, president of the Harbor Valley Homeowners’ Assn., agreed that the neighborhood has become unsafe and the campers are an eyesore.

The new law, Raymond said, “will go a long way to clean up the area.”
