Police arrested a 36-year-old transient Tuesday after he allegedly fired shots at a patrol car.

Antonio De Jesus was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and booked in the Huntington Beach City Jail on $50,000 bail, according to Lt. Charles R. Poe.

Just before 11 p.m. Monday, Officer John Mauger was driving his black-and-white police cruiser north on Jacquelyn Lane, near Slater Avenue, when he heard several gunshots. Mauger said his patrol car was hit by two bullets near the right rear window.

Authorities said Mauger immediately left the area and called for assistance. Additional officers responded and officers on foot arrested De Jesus in an alley east of Jacquelyn Lane. Poe said arresting officers found a 9-millimeter semiautomatic pistol in the suspect’s waistband, as well as a fully loaded ammunition magazine.

Police said they do not know why the officer was fired upon and are continuing to investigate.
