PREP EXTRA / FRIDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : No. 1 Los Alamitos Finishes With Rout of Huntington Beach

In what was supposed to be a rebuilding season for Los Alamitos, the Griffins have showed few signs of letting up.

Los Alamitos finished an undefeated regular season with a 53-7 victory over Huntington Beach Thursday at Veterans Stadium. The Griffins also clinched the Sunset League title outright with a 5-0 mark.

The victory extends Los Alamitos’ unbeaten streak to 45 games. The Griffins are the top-ranked team in Orange County and third-ranked the Southern Section Division I poll.

Los Alamitos, despite being dominated by juniors and sophomores, has outscored opponents, 362-128.

“I just think it’s amazing that we could be undefeated this year,” Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes said. “I still say we’re an awfully young team.”

Los Alamitos broke up a somewhat close game with three touchdowns in the final 3 minutes 34 seconds of the first half.

After an interception, Los Alamitos had a first down at the Huntington Beach 33. On the next play, junior quarterback Kevin Feterik completed a touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Stan Guyness who was wide open.

The pair combined for another 33-yard touchdown pass with 1:09 left in the half to put Los Alamitos up, 27-0.

The Griffins’ final score of the half came when defensive back Damon Houston intercepted a pass and went 19 yards for a touchdown with 38 seconds left.

Feterik completed his night’s work with a three-play drive in the third quarter. The series started at the Los Alamitos 25.

His first pass was good for seven yards to Brad Melsby. Feterik then completed a 33-yard pass to Tony Hartley and ended the 46-second drive with a 35-yard scoring pass to Melsby with 2:40 left in the quarter. The pair had also combined on a 37-yard scoring pass at 9:53 in the second quarter.

Huntington Beach’s touchdown came on a 77-yard pass play from quarterback Jason Bartusick to tight end Billy Campbell with 9:49 left to play. The Oilers end 1-9, 0-5.

Feterik, the top-ranked passer in Orange County, was 13 of 18 for 228 yards and four touchdowns.

“I’m not sure if we are a good team,” Barnes said. “But we are a big-play team.”
