PREP EXTRA / FRIDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Ocean View Pulls Off Upset Over Westminster in the End

The 1995 season might be one that Ocean View fans will want to forget. But Seahawk followers will long remember Ted Norman’s dramatic last second touchdown pass Thursday night that defeated Westminster, 7-6, in a Golden West League game.

Trailing 6-0 with 18 seconds to play, the Seahawks faced fourth down with no timeouts at the Westminster 21-yard line. Norman, who had only completed four passes the entire game, took the snap, scrambled right, reversed his field and threw an arching pass that Terry Schneider caught in the end zone with three seconds left. Jon Dempsey’s extra point gave Ocean View (2-8, 2-3 in league) the upset victory and shocked the fans at Westminster High.

“We actually called the play to the other side,” Norman said. “I called an audible and chucked up a lucky ball and he came down with it.”

After three scoreless quarters, Westminster (6-4, 3-2) took the lead on Jerry Allison’s one-yard run. The extra point was missed and the Lions led 6-0 with 5:14 left. The Lions had two earlier touchdown passes called back because of penalties.

“This is a great win for this program,” said Ocean View Coach John Donelly. “These kids have had to put up with a lot because of the (losing) streak. They deserve this.” Ocean View stopped a 36-game streak two weeks ago when it beat Santa Ana.

Westminster will be the league’s No. 2 representative in the playoffs.
