THOUSAND OAKS : Council to Consider 12-Mile Bike Route

Share

Hoping to encourage commuters to use different wheels, Thousand Oaks council members Tuesday will consider building a new bike route connecting residences, jobs and sports centers in Newbury Park.

Constructing the scenic 12-mile loop by re-striping some roads and posting new signs will cost less than $7,000, according to a public works report. The route will wind down Lynn Road to Reino Road, connect to the Rancho Conejo Industrial Park and Amgen building and swing past shopping centers on Hillcrest Drive.

City staff members are working on a bike route map that would point out landmarks along the loop. They also plan to develop several rest areas featuring benches, bike racks, drinking fountains and shady trees--not to mention a posted route map.

If approved, the Newbury Park loop would be the city’s second major bike trail, joining a central-city circuit established two years ago. The council is also planning a Westlake-area bike loop.

“This second loop is long-awaited,” Councilman Frank Schillo said. “It’s fantastic--a big step in the right direction.”
