PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Security Increased for Raider Game

Anticipating an unruly crowd for Sunday’s sold-out Ram-Raider game, Anaheim Stadium officials and local police will beef up security in an attempt to curb fights among fans that plagued the Aug. 20 exhibition between the teams.

Sgt. Gerald Stec of the Anaheim Police Department, who oversees security for Ram games, said Contemporary Services Inc., which supplies the stadium’s yellow-jacket security officers, will staff 50 extra officers to monitor Sunday’s crowd.

Ram officials have met twice with stadium officials and police this week regarding security concerns stemming from the Raiders’ 29-20 exhibition victory over the Rams in August. Stec said 22 arrests were made, 13 citations issued, and about 100 people were ejected from the stadium for fighting and unruly behavior, much of it alcohol-related.

“We had a lot of fights,” Stec said. “It’s amazing. We had fights during the national anthem, and nothing had even happened in the game yet.”

Stec said stadium officials haven’t planned to curb the sale of alcohol in an attempt to prevent fights.

“The general policy on the alcohol sales . . . is they will shut down sales in the specific section, or entire stadium, if need be,” he said.

Stec said he anticipates a better-behaved crowd on Sunday because it’s a day game. Exhibition games the past two years have been on Saturday night.

Offensive tackle Jackie Slater has worn a Ram uniform for 19 seasons, but could he picture himself in a Raider uniform?

“No, not really,” said Slater, who has played in 253 NFL games. “If I got to line up next to Art Shell, yes. If they put Art back in the black and silver and lined me up at guard right next to him, I could see myself playing for the Raiders.”

After playing against the Raiders as a rookie, Slater visited the opponents’ locker room and introduced himself to the veteran Shell, now the Raider coach.

“I bombarded him with a hundred questions and he answered them all,” Slater said. “He didn’t know who I was, but he took the time to help me. I appreciate to this day the way he dealt with me.”

Right guard Leo Goeas (sore abdomen) was optimistic about playing Sunday, but Coach Chuck Knox has ruled him out, along with third-down tailback Johnny Bailey (sore abdomen). Tackle Darryl Ashmore will start for the second consecutive week in place of Goeas, and David Lang will replace Bailey in the lineup. . . . Inactive for Sunday’s game will be center Bern Brostek (broken leg), tailback James Bostic, offensive tackle Ron Edwards and linebacker Henry Rolling, who underwent surgery Thursday to repair a fractured eye socket.
