SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

There were few surprises Friday night as undefeated Mater Dei beat winless Dana Hills, 42-13, in South Coast League action at Dana Hills.

Monarch quarterback John Flynn was near-perfect in a little more than two quarters of play, throwing for four touchdowns and completing 11 of 12 passes for 256 yards.

Flynn’s main target was sophomore wide receiver Rod Perry, who caught three touchdown passes--of 50, 57 and 17 yards--and finished the night with eight receptions for 236 yards.

The No. 2 Monarchs (10-0, 5-0) scored on every possession in the first half and on their opening drive of the second half before Coach Bruce Rollinson put in the reserves.

The Dolphins (0-10, 0-5) were able to hold Mater Dei scoreless for the remainder of the game, with the Monarchs’ only first down coming on a 53-yard run by reserve running back Zachariah Pricer. Pricer took the ball to the Dolphins’ four-yard line, where the defense kept them out of the end zone.

The first of the Dolphins’ two scoring plays came on a five-yard run by Jon Trottier early in the fourth quarter. After senior Matt Peters recovered an on-sides kick, Dana Hills moved the ball 53 yards on six plays and Scott Maynard connected with senior running back Robert Lathan on a 19-yard touchdown pass.

The Monarchs also got two touchdowns from senior Steve Bodnar, who finished the night with seven carries for 112 yards.
