PREP EXTRA / SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Foothill Whips El Modena, Wins Century League Title

It was not Foothill’s sharpest outing, but the Knights still had more than enough to carve up El Modena Friday night.

A 34-8 victory over the host Vanguards in front of a crowd of about 1,500 gave Foothill its second consecutive Century League championship. Three touchdowns in a six-minute span of the second quarter gave Foothill its 13th consecutive league victory and second consecutive unbeaten league season.

Despite the lopsided score, Foothill Coach Tom Meiss said his team could have played better.

“I didn’t feel like we were in sync offensively,” Meiss said. “I wasn’t happy with our kicking game or our (passing) game. But maybe I’m too greedy.’

He had no reason for concern. El Modena became charitable midway through the second quarter, and the Knights (6-4, 5-0) took advantage, turning a scoreless game into a blowout. Nick Sveslosky’s 90-yard touchdown run gave Foothill a 6-0 lead, then two El Modena turnovers led to two more scores.

A one-yard touchdown run by Tyler Lang after an interception by Travis Freeman made it 12-0. Lang then hit Danny Monarch with a 48-yard touchdown pass after an El Modena fumble in the final minute of the half for a 20-0 Foothill lead.

Sveslosky, who rushed for 93 yards in six carries, and Lawrence Mariner, who transferred to Foothill from El Modena about a month ago, each scored a touchdown in the second half for the Knights (6-4, 5-0).

Foothill’s defense played up to Meiss’ standards, limiting El Modena (3-7, 1-4) to 145 total yards. Foothill held El Modena to less than 100 yards in offense before a 49-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Danny Goodwin to Jason Said spoiled the shutout late in the game.
