California’s highly regarded sophomore quarterback, Pat Barnes, passed for 389 yards.

Napoleon Kaufman, Washington’s all-time rushing leader, re-injured the big toe on his left foot in the first half, did not play in the second and gained only 11 yards in six carries.

But the No. 22-ranked Huskies turned four first-quarter turnovers into 20 points for a 31-19 Pacific 10 Conference victory Saturday.

“It’s like the ‘Nightmare on Elm Street,’ ” Cal Coach Keith Gilbertson said. “It’s heartbreaking to see your team do so many good things and then turn the ball over so many times.”

In the second start of his career, Barnes completed 33 of 44 passes and passed for two touchdowns. He had two passes intercepted. His touchdown passes came in the final 5:12.

It was the second-best passing performance ever by a Cal quarterback. Rich Campbell passed for 421 yards against Florida in 1980.

“Stats are nice, but we’ve got to get a ‘W,’ ” Barnes said.

It was a disappointing final home game for Kaufman. He had his lowest rushing total since gaining 10 yards against Washington State as a freshman in 1991.

“It was kind of hard to sit out the second half,” Kaufman said. “But I can’t complain much. I’ve broken almost every record they have here. I’m not going to hang my head because I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished.”

The Huskies, 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the Pac-10, handed the Bears (3-7, 2-5) their fifth consecutive loss, Cal’s longest losing streak since 1986, when it lost eight in a row.
