HIGHLAND PARK : Skateboard Death Spurs LAPD Warning to Parents

A 9-year-old boy’s death in a skateboard accident in Highland Park--the second such accident in the area in recent weeks--prompted police to remind parents Monday about the dangers of the sport.

Jezraeel Leodones was killed Sunday afternoon when he sat on his skateboard and rode down a 30-foot driveway into the path of a car, said Los Angeles Police Detective Loren Zimmerman of the Central Traffic Division.

It was the second such accident in six weeks in the neighborhood, he said. A 6-year-old boy was killed Sept. 30 when he sat down on his skateboard and raced out a driveway into the path of a car.

The earlier incident occurred about a mile from Sunday’s accident in the 6100 block of Springvale Drive, Zimmerman said. Neither motorist was cited.

“Parents should be cautioned that skateboarding, in itself, is dangerous even for adults,” Zimmerman said. “Parents should not allow this activity by their children or on their property,” the detective said.
