PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Cardinals’ Beuerlein Might Need Surgery

Steve Beuerlein, who injured his left knee during Sunday’s 10-9 victory over the New York Giants, might be lost to the Arizona Cardinals for two to three weeks.

Beuerlein said a magnetic resonance imaging test revealed torn cartilage, which will cause fluid to build up until it is repaired. He said he would decide soon whether to have arthroscopic surgery.

Coach Buddy Ryan said Jay Schroeder, 1-1 as a starter for the Cardinals (4-6), will play if Beuerlein is unable to.

Andre Waters, the starting strong safety, sprained the arch of his right foot in the same game and also might be out this week, when the Philadelphia Eagles visit Sun Devil Stadium.

Cincinnati Bengal running back Steve Broussard, released from a hospital after tests found no permanent damage from a collision that left him temporarily numb, is contemplating retirement.

Broussard was taken from the field on a stretcher with four minutes left in a 34-31 victory over the Houston Oilers. His legs went numb after he made a block and jammed his neck.

Coach Norv Turner said rookie Gus Frerotte will make his fourth start in a row at quarterback for the Washington Redskins against the Dallas Cowboys. . . . New York Giant Coach Dan Reeves, unhappy with quarterback Kent Graham’s play in a 10-9 loss to the Cardinals, said he will wait a couple of days before saying whether Graham or Dave Brown will start Monday night against the Oilers at Houston. . . . New York Jet tackle Jeff Criswell has a hyperextended elbow and is out for Sunday’s game at Minnesota. Without Criswell, the Jets will be missing both starting tackles. Siupeli Malamala still is out with a knee injury. . . . Saint running back Derek Brown has a knee sprain and might not play against the Raiders. Mario Bates, who rushed for 141 yards Sunday against the Falcons, is expected to play despite a bruised shoulder. . . . Falcons safety Roger Harper underwent surgery on a broken right forearm and will be sidelined the rest of the season.
