A convenience store clerk shot an armed robber and scared off his accomplice Tuesday night, authorities said.

Two men, one armed with a semiautomatic pistol, came into the Arrowhead Market in the 600 block of West Avenue J about 6:45 p.m. and ordered store clerk Manhal Samaan, 30, to give them all of the store’s money, Deputy Jeff Cannon of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Samaan reached under the counter for his own handgun and shot one robber, Cannon said. Both robbers then fled the store.

A short time later, Christian George, 18, of Lancaster, came to Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center with a bullet wound in his chest, Cannon said. Deputies arrested George on suspicion of attempted robbery. He was listed in critical condition at the hospital. The investigation is continuing, Cannon said.

The robber’s gun was found at the store, Cannon said. The second robber was still at large, Cannon said.

Samaan was not injured.
