COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NATION : LSU Fires Hallman With 14-28 Record

Curley Hallman, who lost more games in a shorter period than any of his predecessors, was fired as coach at Louisiana State.

Hallman, 14-28 since coming to LSU from Southern Mississippi, will coach the last two games of the season before the dismissal takes effect.

This is Hallman’s fourth year at LSU, all losing seasons. It is also an unprecedented sixth consecutive losing season for the Tigers (2-7), who close the season on the road against Tulane and Arkansas.

Athletic Director Joe Dean said he told Hallman of his dismissal Monday after conferring with LSU Chancellor Bud Davis. Hallman made it clear he was indeed fired: “I did not resign, folks.”

He will be paid for the remaining year on his contract.

Wisconsin Coach Barry Alvarez, who suspended tailback Brent Moss last week after his arrest in a Madison drug bust, said reserve nose tackle John Todryk was suspended after being charged as part of a Milwaukee drug investigation.

Tremain Mack, a freshman safety for Miami, pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors and was reinstated by Hurricane Coach Dennis Erickson. Mack pleaded guilty Monday to disorderly intoxication and simple assault on a police officer. . . . Linebacker Vernon Dozier and tight end Rhasheyd Williams have been suspended indefinitely by 14th-ranked Virginia Tech for violating team rules. Coach Frank Beamer declined to elaborate on the suspensions. . . . The loser of Saturday’s game between No. 15 Michigan and No. 22 Ohio State will be invited to the Holiday Bowl to play the Western Athletic Conference champion. . . . The fifth-place finisher in the Atlantic Coast Conference will play in the Independence Bowl on Dec. 28.
