PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Beuerlein Has Knee Surgery

Arizona Cardinal quarterback Steve Beuerlein had surgery Tuesday to repair torn cartilage in his left knee.

The Cardinals said Beuerlein is expected to return in two to three weeks. He was injured Sunday during the Cardinals’ first offensive series against the New York Giants.

He continued to play and directed both second-half scoring drives in a 10-9 victory which left the Cardinals at 4-6.

Coach Buddy Ryan said Jay Schroeder would start Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

San Francisco defensive end Richard Dent, sidelined since tearing knee ligaments in the season’s second week, is not ready to return this week. He had hoped to play against the Rams. Tight end Brent Jones has a sprained left knee and could also miss the game. . . . The Eagles signed free agent kicker Jeff Wilkins to a one-year contract. He is expected to be used only on kickoffs and Eddie Murray will continue to kick field goals and extra points. . . .

Chief wide receiver Michael Young, a former Ram, retired because of a back injury. Young, 32, from UCLA, played four years with Denver and one with Philadelphia. . . . The Dolphins waived running back Mark Higgs. . . . Steeler tight end Eric Green (pulled hamstring) and rookie running back Bam Morris (leg-muscle contusion) are doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Dolphins. . . . Chief defensive end Neil Smith, running back Marcus Allen and cornerback Mark Collins might miss Sunday’s game against the Browns because of injuries.
