HAWAIIAN GARDENS : Voters Will Decide How City Clerk Is Selected

Share

Voters will be asked to decide next March whether the city clerk should be elected or continue to be appointed by the City Council.

The council voted 4-1 last week to place the question on the March 7 municipal election ballot. Voters will also be asked whether the city clerk, if elected, should serve two- or four-year terms.

Regardless of the outcome, the city clerk will have a reduced role in the city government. The council has decided to make the city clerk a part-time adviser with a nominal salary instead of a full-time management employee who earns $75,000 a year.

The city clerk’s position has been vacant since Carol Dorfmeyer retired in December, 1993. Her duties were taken over by Deputy Clerk Eve Thiffell.
