Saving Navy Bases Focus of Open House

Share

A task force of local leaders preparing to defend Ventura County’s two Navy bases against potential closure will hold an open house Friday afternoon at the group’s office near the Camarillo Airport.

The BRAC 95 Task Force is expecting as many as 200 people to drop by its county-donated office space and hear various strategies to prevent the closure of Navy bases at Point Mugu and Port Hueneme.

“This is going to be the big kickoff of what we’re trying to do,” said Bill Simmons, the task force’s coordinator.

Defense contractors, business leaders and local officials formed the task force to make sure neither of the county’s bases is targeted during next year’s round of base closures.

So far, the group has raised about $200,000 in public and private donations, hired a high-powered Washington, D.C., lobbyist and is planning to send a delegation to the nation’s capital next month.

The two-hour open house begins at 4 p.m. Friday in the office building at 555 Airport Way, near the Camarillo Airport. For more information, call 388-4481.
