Boy Commended for Aiding Classmate

Mario Neavez, 13, has been commended by the city and school administrators for helping a classmate.

Mario rushed to the aid of a 13-year-old girl when he saw her get hit by a car while she was crossing a street two months ago. The eighth-grade Washington Middle School student called police and stayed by the girl’s side, comforting her until paramedics arrived.

His action earned him kudos and respect, Principal Gary Mantey said.

Mario “showed a lot of courage and a lot of responsibility,” Mantey said. “He’s a real positive role model for the rest of the students. They admire him.”

23 Graduates Win Scholastic Honors

The College Board, a national nonprofit association made up of about 2,900 schools, colleges, universities and academic organizations, has named 23 Brea Olinda High School students “Advanced Placement Scholar” winners.

The students, who graduated in June, were honored in the following categories: AP Scholar with Distinction, AP Scholar with Honor and AP Scholar. They qualified by taking college-level Advanced Placement examinations in May, earning grade point averages higher than 3.0 and completing challenging college-level courses.

The highest honor, AP Scholar with Distinction, went to seven of the 23 students: Janet Byun, Carl Daucher, Clarice Ho, Bill Jones, Brandon Kilpatrick, Alice Park and Andrew Scheffler.

Gifts Sought for Orangewood Youths

Cal State Fullerton public relations students are urging the public to help make Christmas special for the youths at Orangewood Children’s Home.

They are seeking donations of new toys, clothing and gift certificates for residents at the shelter, who range in age from a few weeks to 18 years.

Donations may be taken to the shelter at 401 The City Drive South in Orange. For more information, call the home at (714) 935-7584.

15 Students Attend National Conference

Scott Heileson, a senior at Foothill High School, was among 15 Orange County high school students who attended a national conference on drug abuse and gang prevention in Washington recently.

The five-day conference at the Sheraton Washington Hotel was sponsored by the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, and attended by more than 1,000 community leaders from across the nation.

“It was a lot of fun,” Heileson said. “It gave us a chance to see what adult leaders and organizations across the country are doing about drug and gang prevention.”--COMPILED BY MIMI KO AND BERT ELJERA
