A lone gunman robbed a federal credit union Thursday, firing into the floor as he escaped, witnesses told police.

The man entered the Orange County Federal Credit Union in the 1200 block of East Dyer Road just after 3 p.m., according to police Sgt. Dick Faust.

He displayed a handgun to a teller and demanded money. When the teller hesitated, he demanded money from another teller and became impatient, reaching over the counter and taking a cash drawer.

On his way out of the building, he fired one round into the floor. The shot ricocheted but did not hit anyone. Police would not say how much cash was taken.

Faust said the man got into a late-model, dark blue Toyota MR-2 and fled on the Costa Mesa Freeway.

Witnesses described the man as Asian, age 24 to 30, 5 feet 6 inches and about 165 pounds.
