SUN VALLEY : Parent Graduates to Tell Personal Stories

Share

Graduates of Hope In Youth’s parenting empowerment class will be honored at a 7 p.m. ceremony today at Holy Rosary Church, 7800 Vineland Ave., Sun Valley.

The ceremony will feature the personal stories of three of the 18 graduating parents who will describe their experiences and the ways Hope In Youth helped them.

Hope In Youth is a Los Angeles-based gang prevention program geared toward at-risk youths and their parents. Some of the programs are designed by the young people themselves. The organization, which is about a year old, is an outgrowth of several Catholic charities linked with other charitable organizations and religious denominations.

The organization’s parenting classes are designed to improve communication skills, encourage parents to take more active roles in the children’s lives and boost self-confidence. The goal is to ultimately make schools and neighborhoods safer by developing stronger family relationships and teaching parents and children how to participate in government and community affairs.

About 2,100 parents have graduated from the 12-week program in the Los Angeles area.
