Central : ORANGE : Fines for Unscrambled Adult Films Hiked

Share

The City Council gave preliminary approval Tuesday night to a local ordinance that would raise city fines up to $5,000 against Cablevision of Orange for airing unscrambled adult movies.

About 25 residents who stumbled across the movies, which one said was “pornography beyond belief,” said the proposed increase was not enough.

“This is the future of our country, the future of the city of Orange. We just have to make a stand now,” said Elaine Jumpe.

The controversy has been going on for about two months, since resident Kathy Davis brought the matter to the council’s attention.

Kristy Casasanti, general manager of Cablevision, said the problem occurred because the Playboy Channel had shared a channel with regular programming and was not scrambled properly. She said the problem was resolved when they gave Playboy its own channel. Also, they now have set traps on the televisions of everyone who has complained.

“We continue to look for an alternative solution, although we feel that trapping is the solution at this time,” Casasanti said.

But residents say the audio portion of the adult programming is still coming through, and that many sets are still receiving unscrambled movies.
