TORRANCE : Police Open Substation at Downtown Location

Share

Instead of having to go to the main police station to carry out their business, the public and Torrance police officers can use a substation downtown.

The mini-station, which opened recently at 1215 El Prado St., will have most of the amenities of the main station at the Civic Center. Officers will use the substation for interviewing witnesses, taking statements and sending reports to the main station via computer.

Officers at the station will also provide information about public safety and police programs, take reports and make referrals to other agencies.

The substation was built as part of the downtown redevelopment. Developers of the neighborhood agreed to pay for the station as part of the project. The police department has another substation at Del Amo Fashion Center.

More than 300 people attended the open house earlier this month at the new station. “I felt like the welcome wagon had pulled up,” said Officer Don Sherwood. “We even had plants and flowers sent to us.”

Sherwood is one of four community lead officers who will work at the new facility. Police chaplains and some patrol officers may also use the new center.

The El Prado Street substation will probably be open six days a week, but the hours of operation have not been set, Sherwood said.
