Live Long and Act Well

Re Kenneth Turan’s characterization of William Shatner as an alumnus of the Klingon Academy of Dramatic Arts (“ ‘Star Trek’: We’ve Gone This Way Before,” Nov. 17):

In episode after episode of “Star Trek,” Shatner’s dramatic renditions captivated the Trekker audience! Consider his electrifying reading of the Preamble to the Constitution in “The Omega Glory,” which should be required viewing in every classroom in America. Or his mesmerizing dual role as the good and evil halves of Capt. Kirk in “The Enemy Within.” Or his gripping portrayal of a frustrated female in the body of Capt. Kirk in “Turnabout Intruder.”

In many instances, he enhanced an already intriguing plot; in others he enlivened an otherwise lackluster story. But, always, his acting was a crucial component of the heart and soul of “Star Trek.”

Moreover, Shatner distinguished himself in a myriad of riveting roles outside of “Star Trek,” such as a homicidal schizophrenic camp counselor on “The Fugitive” and a neurotic airline passenger combatting an alien gremlin on “The Twilight Zone.”
