COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titan Women Lose Opener to Washington State, 75-73

Jenni Ruff made a short jumper with five seconds left to lift Washington State to a 75-73 victory over Cal State Fullerton in a nonconference women’s basketball game Friday at Cal State Fullerton. It was the season-opener for both teams.

Autumn Hollyfield made two free throws to put the Titans ahead, 73-71, with 2:12 left. Laura Wilder tied it, 73-73, for Washington State on a bank shot with 2:01 remaining.

Hollyfield scored a game-high 23 points. Shayla Bradshaw added 21 points for Fullerton but fouled out with 5:53 left to play. Marissa Frial added 16 points for Cal State Fullerton.

Kireen Ellis had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Ruff had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Washington State.

In another nonconference game:

Humboldt State 97, Concordia 73--Kara Stephens had 12 points to lead Concordia (0-2) in its losing effort. Trina Dukes had 25 points for Humboldt (2-1).

Pepperdine 59, UC Irvine 56--Ellen Blackbum made a three-pointer with 9:24 left to put visiting Pepperdine ahead for good. The basket gave the Waves a 46-44 lead in the season-opener for both teams. Lisa Siders scored 16 points and Blackbum had 12 for Pepperdine.

Allah-mi Basheer had 16 points and nine rebounds and Tamera Thomas had 13 points for UC Irvine.

In a semifinal of the Caltech men’s basketball tournament:

Pacific Christian College 103, California Christian College 71--Charles Ross had 26 points and Chuck Henderson scored 19 to lead host Pacific Christian (5-2).
