In honor of the upcoming Chinese New Year, an exhibit titled “Last of the Manchus” by historical miniaturist George Stuart will be on display through Feb. 6 at the Carole & Barry Kaye Museum of Miniatures.

Stuart has created the likenesses of several historical characters from the end of China’s Manchu Dynasty, including Empress Tzu-Hsi, who ruled the Chinese court at the time of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900.

Eighteen inches tall, the costumed miniatures are constructed on metal skeletons from a combination of papier-mache, Styrofoam and cotton padding. Over this a lifelike “skin” of cloth and a special blend of plastic are applied by the artist in layers for the most realistic effect.

The museum is also sponsoring a contest in hopes of discovering unknown Asian miniaturists. Entrants are asked to submit a photograph of their best work to the attention of Carole Kaye, the Museum of Miniatures, 5900 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles 90036. Entries are due Jan. 13. The winning miniaturist will be notified by mail, and all entries will be exhibited at the museum from Jan. 28 through Feb. 6.
