A post office employee was shocked Saturday when an apparent customer handed her a note that said, “I have a gun, give me your money or I will kill you.” The word kill was underlined in the threat, police said.

The clerk then passed the unidentified man $1,500 in cash from behind the window where she was working. “She complied with the demand note out of fear,” said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Don Kiefer of the Van Nuys Division.

The robber, who never pulled a gun, took the money and ran from the Sherman Oaks branch of the post office, located in the 14900 block of Magnolia Boulevard, heading in an unknown direction. No one saw him as he fled, police said.

Late Saturday, officers at the Van Nuys division were still looking for the suspect.

The holdup began at 2:30 p.m. when the man entered the post office posing as a customer. Witnesses described him as a heavily built African American in his early 20s, Kiefer said. Most of his head was shaved, with a little hair left on top, witnesses added.

He was very calm as he entered the post office and waited in line before approaching the clerk with his note, witnesses said.
