Bertrando Ends Career With 10th-Place Finish
Making the final start of his career in the NYRA Mile on Saturday at Aqueduct, Bertrando virtually ran right off the plane. He didn’t arrive in New York until Saturday morning and competed several hours later.
The 5-year-old Skywalker horse would have been better off if his flight had been delayed.
Bertrando bowed out of the game with a whimper, finishing 10th of 12 in the $250,000 race, which was easily won by 8-1 shot Cigar.
Owned by Madeleine Paulson, trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Jerry Bailey, the 4-year-old Palace Music colt strolled home seven lengths in front of 2-1 favorite Devil His Due.
