Joe Montana’s injured foot was diagnosed as a sprain Monday, and the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback was pronounced questionable for next week’s game against Denver.

Backup Steve Bono took all the snaps during a light workout, one day after the Chiefs lost, 10-9, at Seattle to fall to 7-5.

Coach Marty Schottenheimer said a decision on Montana’s availability probably won’t be made until Friday at the earliest and game time Sunday at the latest.

Montana, who Sunday became the fifth quarterback in NFL history to throw for 40,000 yards, will be re-evaluated Wednesday, the next practice for the Chiefs after their usual day off today.

Montana was injured in the third quarter. He tried to come back and then was taken to the clubhouse.

Dallas Cowboy quarterback Troy Aikman, who missed the Thanksgiving Day victory over the Green Bay Packers because of a sprained knee ligament, indicated he might be able to play Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“My knee is getting better and I’ll probably know more by Wednesday,” Aikman said.

Jason Garrett threw two touchdown passes in the 42-31 victory on Thanksgiving.

Second-string quarterback Rodney Peete said his sore thumb was improved.

Cincinnati Bengal strong safety Louis Oliver has a cracked bone below his left kneecap and will not play again this season. . . . Houston Oiler Coach Jeff Fisher fined wide receiver Webster Slaughter one game check worth $9,529 and threatened to suspend him for the season for his critical comments following a loss at Cleveland on Sunday. Slaughter has been critical of the team’s decision to scrap its run-and-shoot offense. . . . San Diego Charger Coach Bobby Ross turned down left cornerback Darrien Gordon’s request to also play wide receiver. Gordon returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown and made an acrobatic end-zone interception in a 31-17 victory over the Rams on Sunday. . . . The Seattle Seahawks placed running back Jon Vaughn on waivers. . . . Indianapolis Colt defensive tackle Steve Emtman is in satisfactory condition after undergoing neck surgery. The Colts announced last week that Emtman will miss the rest of the season because of a herniated disk in his neck.
