NCAA Panel Upholds Suspension of Long Beach State Guard Mays

The NCAA Eligibility Committee upheld a previous ruling against Tye Mays, a Long Beach State point guard, meaning the senior is academically ineligible for the fall semester, the university’s director of compliance and student services said Tuesday.

“I thought we had a legitimate shot,” Mary Ann Tripodi said. “You just don’t know how the committee is going to see everything.”

Mays is ineligible because of erroneous advice by school officials about selecting the proper courses. Mays is in good academic standing.

“This is really disappointing,” Coach Seth Greenberg said. “Tye is a great kid and he’s done nothing wrong and he’s being punished.”

Mays will become eligible at the end of the fall semester if he maintains satisfactory academic progress. The last day of final examinations is Dec. 16.

His grades must be checked by Sharon Clark, the university’s technician of enrollment services, and David Bernstein, the faculty athletic representative. Greenberg hopes to have Mays available by Dec. 21 when the 49ers play host to Montana.

Mays, 6 feet 1, averaged four points and 1.3 assists as a junior.
