Convicted rapist Reginald Donald Muldrew has been transferred from Pelican Bay State Prison in Northern California to the state prison in Lancaster in preparation for his parole, authorities said Wednesday.

California Department of Corrections spokesman William Gengler said Muldrew, 46, has completed a psychiatric examination, the results of which should be available by Friday. If Muldrew fails the exam, he could be kept in custody for six months, Gengler said.

Gengler also said authorities have not determined into what city Muldrew will be paroled, but said he is scheduled to be paroled somewhere in Southern California. Typically, Gengler said, the psychiatric exam is administered the day of parole but can be done in advance. Department of Corrections officials would not say when Muldrew’s parole date was. However, Covina Police Chief John Lentz said state officials told him that Muldrew was scheduled to be released Sunday in Covina.

Gengler said the department has received statements from eight women in the Los Angeles area who say they were victims of Muldrew and are requesting that he not be paroled within 35 miles of where they live. Under state law, a parolee cannot be released within 35 miles of his victims or those who testified against him in court. The department is checking the validity of the women’s claims, Gengler said, adding that they appeared to be valid.

Muldrew arrived at the Lancaster prison Monday afternoon, prison spokesman Dean Crenshaw said. Muldrew is being housed in a high-security unit where inmates spend most of their time in their cells.
