WET WINTER: Wonder what winter holds? Don’t be fooled by this week’s balmy temperatures. The venerable Farmer’s Almanac predicts a wet season ahead with lots of snow in the San Gabriel and Sierra Nevada mountains. Frequent cold blasts like last week’s are in store for this month and next. . . . If a June wedding is planned, take note that it will be cooler than normal.

NOT JUST WEATHER: While best known for its long-term weather forecasts, the 203-year-old Farmer’s Almanac actually contains a wealth of tidbits, including a short course on relativity and stories about cowboy songs. . . . It also chronicles trends. Green, for instance, is the most popular color of car right now. And old ashtrays are hip.

NO GRIPING: No matter how windy and cold it gets this winter in Winnetka, residents of its sister community in Illinois will have it worse. Mary Lou Brown of the Chamber of Commerce in that Chicago suburb said highs this week have been in the low 30s--and winter is still three weeks away. . . . “You should smile out in California,” she said.

MONEY TO BURN: With winter come higher gas bills. Southern California Gas Co. officials warned customers that their next bill might well be higher than usual because of November’s cold snap (D1). “Customers should not be surprised to find that their gas bill is four to seven times higher than their previous bill,” Vice President Roy Rawlings said. . . . Turn down the heat to 68 degrees during the day and 55 at night to save money. And wear sweaters.

IN-VITRO: Here’s a story to warm the heart. Comedian Roseanne has undergone in-vitro fertilization in hopes of becoming pregnant by the time she weds her chauffeur-bodyguard on Valentine’s Day. Bridegroom Ben Thomas is from North Hollywood. . . . Roseanne bared her story--and her bandaged belly-button--on the Letterman show.

November Weather

Winter storms blowing in off the Pacific have brought cold snaps to Southern California. Very few days in November were warmer than the normal high temperature of 70 degrees.
