COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Stanford’s Diehl Wins 500-Yard Freestyle
Eric Diehl, former Mission Viejo High star who now swims for Stanford, won the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes 30.63 seconds, beating teammate Joe Hudepohl by more than a second Thursday at the UC Irvine Speedo Cup at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.
Stanford’s men also won the 200 free relay (1:22.54) and the 400 medley relay (3:17.22).
In the 50 free, world record-holder Tom Jager was beaten by University of the Pacific’s Brad Schumacher, who won in 20.31. Bjorn Zikarsky, who swims with the Irvine Novaquatics, placed sixth in 21.07.
In women’s competition, the UCLA women won the 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay. Competition continues today, and the meet concludes Saturday.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Cal State Fullerton 96, Loyola Marymount 74--Koko Lahanas scored 32 points and had 18 rebounds, and Shayla Bradshaw had 30 points and nine assists as Fullerton (1-1) won its first game. Loyola Marymount is 0-2.
