A search-and-rescue team recovered a car from the ocean near Mugu Rock early Saturday after a witness reported seeing the speeding vehicle plunge off a cliff, authorities said.
Ventura County sheriff’s rescue divers summoned to search the waters were unable to find any bodies, authorities said.
The witness, driving by the area at about 1 a.m., said the 1988 Ford Mustang was heading south on Pacific Coast Highway at speeds of 80 to 100 m.p.h., the California Highway Patrol said.
After launching off the cliff, the car flew about 250 feet and sank in 75 feet of water, the CHP said.
The divers called off their search after several hours, upon determining the strong ocean current would have moved a body southward from the immediate vicinity, a CHP spokesman said.
“We just have to wait for somebody to report seeing a body,” the spokesman said.
The incident may have been a suicide attempt, authorities said.
The car is registered to a Ventura County resident, the CHP said. But investigators said the car owner no longer resides at the registered address. No other information on the driver or possible passengers was recovered from the car, the CHP said.
