Two private planes collided over Santa Paula Airport on Sunday afternoon, but both pilots suffered only minor injuries from the accident and were able to walk away from the wreckage, authorities said.
The 2:30 p.m. accident occurred after a westbound Grumman monoplane flown by Jeffrey Jacobs, 54, of Simi Valley collided with an eastbound Great Lakes biplane flown by Joe Lansden, 56, also of Simi Valley, according to Santa Paula Police Agent Carlos Juarez.
Juarez said the two pilots were attempting to land when their planes collided over the east end of the runway. No other injuries were reported.
When rescue units arrived at the airport, both pilots were out of their planes, Juarez said. Lansden was taken to Santa Paula Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.
Following the crash, the Great Lakes biplane caught fire, but the blaze was quickly extinguished.
