Suddenly the playoffs aren’t such a sure thing for the Cleveland Browns.

Brad Daluiso’s 33-yard field goal with 19 seconds left Sunday gave the New York Giants a 16-13 victory and knocked the Browns out of first place in the AFC Central for the first time this season.

With difficult road games at Dallas and division-leading Pittsburgh coming up, the Browns (9-4) have some reason to worry. They haven’t been to the playoffs since 1989.

“It’s going to be hard to put this loss completely behind us,” said Vinny Testaverde, who threw two interceptions and lost a fumble for three of Cleveland’s five turnovers. “We need to realize the opportunities that lie ahead. This loss has to be used as motivation to get us through the next two tough games on the road.”

The Giants (6-7) led for most of the game, but Leroy Hoard’s five-yard run with 4:24 left pulled the Browns into a 13-13 tie.

Dave Brown and the Giants, with the worst offense in the NFL, then went to work. Starting at his 26, Brown connected with Chris Calloway for 26 yards on third and 15, Mike Sherrard for 13 yards on third and nine and ran six yards on third and one.

“I was taking the mentality that I wasn’t going to screw this up,” Brown said. “I played a little too cautious at times. . . . But once the two-minute drill came around, I realized there was nothing to lose by going out there and being more aggressive.”

Daluiso hooked the winning kick inside the left upright as a light rain fell.

Daluiso, normally the Giants’ kickoff specialist, made three field goals in the game after David Treadwell was benched for missing a 37-yard field goal late in the first half. Treadwell also missed two attempts last week.

The Giants kept their faint playoff hopes alive with their third consecutive victory after a seven-game losing streak. All three victories were by three points of less.

Cleveland began the day with a chance to clinch a playoff berth. The Browns self-destructed, committing turnovers on four of their first five second-half possessions before finally tying it on Hoard’s run. Rookie Derrick Alexander set up the touchdown with a 60-yard reception from Testaverde.

Brown completed 17 of 33 passes for 226 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Pierce in the first quarter.
