REAGAN’S ROUTE: Ronald Reagan supporters are delighted that the state Senate voted unanimously Monday to name a freeway for the former president (B4), but what about the fine folks of Simi Valley who will see the city’s name unceremoniously dumped from the stretch of the 118 freeway from San Fernando to Moorpark? . . . “It’s been an interesting phenomenon that basically our freeway is being renamed, without us being asked,” Simi Valley Mayor Greg Stratton said. “But there are a lot of people who honor Ronald Reagan, and from our perspective, it is not a problem.”

IN MEMORY: Amid the somber words at Monday’s memorial service for community college Chancellor Thomas G. Lakin came a touch of humor. (B1) “He was a cookie monster,” recalled Oxnard College President Elise D. Schneider. “On every campus he would seek out cookies.” . . . Schneider recalled a thank-you note Lakin once sent to a woman who had baked cookies for the district office. He confessed he ate the whole plate himself. After the memorial, the district served refreshments: coffee and cookies.

TAKING STOCK: Time was that Ventura County investors bought stock in what they knew: oil companies. But the county has diversified and so have its residents. (Valley Business, Page 8) . . . Longtime Ventura stockbroker Glenn Fitzgerald said his customers now tend to favor biotechnology and computer-related companies--two industries that have gained a firm foothold in the county’s economy as well.
