Area Residents Recognized for Achievement

Mary Ellen Vogt, a member of the Cal State Long Beach teacher education faculty since 1989, has received the Marcus Foster Memorial Award from the California Reading Assn. for service in furthering the teaching of reading. Vogt is one of nine authors of Houghton-Mifflin Co.’s 1996 reading language arts series.

Long Beach resident Dolores Gale has received the Greater Long Beach Child Guidance Center’s annual Agency Service Award. Gale has served as a volunteer for the center since it started in 1979. She is serving her third term as president of the Friends of the Child Guidance Center. Long Beach resident Janice Fairbanks received the center’s Community Service Award for her work with children who suffer from attention-deficit disorder. The agency also installed new officers: Long Beach resident Peter Welty, president; Signal Hill resident Rev. Paul Lance, vice president; Long Beach resident Jack Senske, secretary, and Long Beach resident Tim Snee, treasurer.

The National Assn. for Community Leadership has honored Long Beach community activist June Cooper with a Distinguished Leadership Award at the group’s annual conference in Seattle. Cooper, a vice chancellor at Cal State University, is a member of the board of directors of Leadership Long Beach, an organization trying to improve Long Beach through education.

Three El Rancho High School graduates have been named to the El Rancho Unified School District’s Hall of Fame. They are Edward Cabrera, class of ‘78, a U.S. Air Force senior test pilot; Gilbert Carrillo, class of ‘67, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detective, and Camerino Sanchez Jr., class of ‘71, police chief for the city of Hollister, in Northern California. El Rancho High School is in Pico Rivera.
