China Repeats Ultimatum for GATT-WTO Entry: China, brushing aside U.S. and European objections, reiterated its demand to be admitted to the new World Trade Organization by year’s end, with the rights of a developing country. “The Chinese government has made an important decision to set the deadline of Dec. 31, 1994, to complete the substantive stage of China’s GATT-WTO negotiation,” Deputy Foreign Trade Minister Long Yongtu said in a speech to delegates of the 124 member nations in GATT. Long rejected charges from the United States and European Union that his delegation had not been flexible enough in the latest round of the 8-year-old negotiations. Long headed a delegation to weeklong private meetings in Geneva.
